Stage 1: Preliminary Construction
To get this project recap started, we'll begin with the preliminary construction stages where the footings had been poured. Located at City Hall in North Kansas City, MO, this project is called the Fallen Officer Monument and was completed in 2025. Designed to serve as a memorial for those who lost their lives while serving on North Kansas City's Police and Fire Departments, this monument does an excellent job of recognizing these local heroes.
We would like to highlight all of the local companies that worked on this project and truly helped bring it to life! It was an honor to work alongside these talented professionals. These companies included MegaKC, WSKF Architects, Stine-Nichols Plumbing, McClure, Fry & Associates, PM Contracting, and Johnson Granite.
Stage 2: Fabrications of Plaques at Wil-Clair Shop
A major aspect of this monument is the plaques that would be installed. These plaques feature the names of the heroes who lost their lives, as well as a few of the values in which they lived by. They were made out of 10 gauge #3 stainless steel and programmed/cut via the water jet machine.
Stage 3: Caps and Center Column
Another key component of this were the caps and center column. As shown on the finished product, these served an integral role in the monument's physical and structural appearance. The stainless steel caps (which would be installed over the granite) were designed by a computerized layout and then cut on the water jet. We then welded the pieces together, cleaned them, and they were bead blasted to a #10 blast. To ensure a seamless installation at City Hall, pegs were added to the bottom in order to match the existing pre-drilled holes in the granite.
Meanwhile, the center column was also cut with the water jet machine. In the last two photos, you'll see this piece. In order to keep the integrity of the post in-tact as it was being transported to-and-from the bead blaster and jobsite, we carefully packaged the column into this wooden structure.
Stage 4: Granite Installed at City Hall
While our team was working on getting everything fabricated at our shop, construction was moving right along at City Hall. The granite was installed, the water fountain was completed and you could see the framework for this awesome monument. At this time, our team was able to take field measurements and program everything into the computer to ensure there was a perfect fit from granite to stainless.
Stage 5: Dedication Plaque
Before we head out to City Hall to share the finished project, the final component that was fabricated at our shop was the dedication plaque. This piece would be installed behind the monument. It was cut out of 10 gauge stainless on the water jet machine and designed to recognize those who helped make this project a reality!
Stage 6: Project Complete!
And just like that, we have another completed project! Our team fabricated and installed stand-offs to connect each individual plaque to the granite. After the caps were installed, PM Contracting added lights below, which certainly made a major difference when viewing the monument at night. If you're interested in seeing this special project in-person, it's displayed at City Hall in North Kansas City, MO. We would like to give a big thanks to everyone that helped out with this project!
